Michelle’s Haberdashery

Haberdashery 1Bubbly Michelle Reynolds runs Michelle’s Haberdashery on Margaret Block at Bury Market. What she doesn’t know about sewing, knitting and crafting isn’t worth knowing, and she sells all the tools of the trade, accessories and embellishments to produce the perfect creations.

Michelle, aged 45, has had a stall on Bury Market for 18 years, after being made redundant from a job at a mortgage broker. Out of work, she started helping out her father, Frank Reynolds on his haberdashery stalls on the markets at Newton. Having been taught the trade by the best, Michelle was soon ready for her first foray into the world of haberdashery, running her own stall at Radcliffe market, but she soon moved over to Bury.

“I’m very lucky because not many people sell what I sell on Bury Market and haberdashery has never really been out of fashion.

“We have a very wide range of stock, with everything from buttons, to craft and card-making materials, ribbons, cottons, bobbins – everything you would need from a haberdashery.

“People seem to love the stall.”

Buttons are Michelle’s best-seller, thanks to the current craze for using them for all manner of crafts and card-making.

Knitting is another popular pastime – no doubt thanks to the current revival of knitting fuelled by Julia Roberts and Kate Moss who have been seen happily clicking away with the needles.

As for the future, Michelle can’t see herself doing anything else. “This has always been my favourite job – I love dealing with the public, the banter with the traders, the customers are friendly, it is just really nice.”
