BURY SAMARITAN VOLUNTEER ENJOYS ROYAL CUPPA AT PRINCE CHARLES’ 70TH BIRTHDAY

Bury volunteer, Darran Latham, tucked into a sarnie and sipped a brew with royalty, while attending the prestigious party on May 22nd, after being nominated for his commitment and dedication by volunteering colleagues.

Prince Charles, who turns 70 in November, began his birthday celebrations with a party to honour the work closest to his heart. The May 22nd event was attended by representatives of each of the charities he is patron of, as well as the military regiments he is affiliated with, who all visited the palace grounds for entertainment and speeches, as well as the customary garden party tea.

Darran originally came to Bury to undertake 12 months residential care for alcohol dependency and relocated to Bury after completing his treatment. He applied to Bury Samaritans and also enrolled at Bury College to undertake a University Access Course. With the hard work of himself and the dedication of the excellent access team staff, Darran achieved top grades. This enabled him to go and study on the award winning Criminological and Forensic Psychology Pathway at the University of Bolton.

Darran says, “The award came out of the blue and I’m obviously proud to receive it, I believe it could have gone to any number of Samaritans at Bury Branch, it’s such a valuable resource and a massive credit to the town.  Bury gave me the chance to rebuild my life and being a Samaritan gives me the chance to help others in the community who otherwise would have no support.”

Samaritan volunteers presented Prince Charles with a personalised photo gift which represents the number of calls for help Samaritans has answered since he became Patron. Over the 19 years as Patron, Samaritans has responded to approximately 96.8 million calls for help.
