BURY REMEMBERS THE FIRST WORLD WAR – WITH FREE BOX OF INSPIRATION

A wealth of local history from the First World War has been brought together for the first time – and it’s yours for free. Inside each Inspiration Box is a selection of articles from local newspapers originally published in 1914-19, copies of poetry and letters, advertisements, and servicemen’s obituaries and photographs. There are also recipes from the period submitted by Bury people, which were published in the YMCA Bazaar Cookery Book 1916, and examples of modern artworks produced by The Bury Collective. These Inspiration Boxes have been put together by Bury Archives, with help from local volunteers, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. You can pick up your box for free at Bury, Prestwich, Radcliffe, Ramsbottom, Tottington, Unsworth and Whitefield Libraries. A council spokesman said: “So far these boxes have been used to inspire artists and school children to produce their own artworks, poems, letters and adverts in response to the newspaper content. We now want to share this information further and give more people a chance to interact with this fabulous resource.

“If all this amazing content grabs your attention and you wish to unleash your inner artist, poet, writer or chef, we would love you to share the results with us. All work that is submitted will be considered for exhibition at the end of the project and may be published.” For more details, and to see the project work done so far, call Bury Archives based at Bury Library on 0161 253 6782.
