COULD YOU BECOME A DEMENTIA CHAMPION?

Do you know someone who is living with dementia? Are you passionate about your local community? Then we need you!

Dementia Friendly Communities is a programme which makes sure that people living with dementia feel understood, valued and able to contribute to their community. Our definition of ‘community’ is a place where people live, work or study. This includes schools, businesses, scout groups and residential care homes.

A network of dementia champions is being set up across the borough and a series of meetings has been arranged where local people can drop in and discover how they can get involved.

The next meeting is for people who live in Whitefield and Unsworth, and is held on Thursday 30 November at Morrison’s supermarket community room, Whitefield from 10am to noon.

Councillor Andrea Simpson, the council’s cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “For everyone to enjoy their community we may need to make improvements to areas that others take for granted. Examples of this may include GP surgeries, shopping centres, parks and green spaces and housing. Dementia Friendly Communities will champion these changes for the benefit of people living with dementia, their family and the whole community.

“To make this work, Dementia Friendly Communities needs wide-ranging membership so if you are interested in this area of work and are passionate about your local community, please come along to your local meeting.”
