Award-winning BBC Radio sports broadcaster Eleanor Oldroyd is to join runners taking part in this year’s Asda Foundation Bury 10K.

Bury-born Eleanor, 55, whose voice is familiar to listeners of Radio 5 Live, is a patron of the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, one of the event’s partner charities. Eleanor said: “It’s fair to say I’m no Paula Radcliffe but the joy of Run For All events is that runners of all abilities are encouraged to take part, with many of them raising lots of money for some fantastic causes.

Also on the start line on Sunday 17th September will be Dawn Nisbet, whose photograph of her celebrating as she crossed the finish line of a park run earlier this year went viral.

Dawn, 41, an NHS business manager from Oldham, finished her park run at least 10 minutes behind the other entrants, but the photograph that captured her elation and sense of achievement inspired many other people to pull on their trainers. She received thousands of congratulatory messages after the image was posted on social media.

Following that inspirational park run, Dawn set herself the challenge to run 500K this year in aid of Alzheimer’s Research UK and Cancer Research UK and started writing a blog (#2017dawnsyear). She is already doing so well that she has upped her target to 1000K!

She said: “Many people lack the confidence to take on an organised run but if I can do it anyone can. The achievement is in taking part and if you can support a good cause as well, so much the better.”

The run starts and finishes close to The Rock retail and leisure venue and follows a route that sees the runner’s pass Bury Parish Church, the Fusilier Museum, Bury Art Museum, along Manchester Road, Dumers Lane, Bury Road, Radcliffe Road and back towards The Rock.

They are organised by Run For All, part of the legacy of the late Jane Tomlinson, who raised nearly £2m for charity by tackling a string of gruelling challenges despite being diagnosed with incurable cancer.

As well as the 10K, the event also includes the Arena Group Bury Family Fun Run, a short distance run for all ages and abilities.
