Wine Showcase

With Anna Moss and Lewis Drewe of Basil & Lily, Prestwich

This month we invited one of Prestwich’s newest wine bars, Basil & Lily, to review a few favourite wines from their extensive selection. Owner of the Italian wine bar, Anna Moss and Development Manager, Lewis Drewe were happy to sample and give their verdict.

La Scolca ‘Gold’ – Cortese – Gavi
Gavi is great for any occasion and any time. It suits all those that like a dry style but has a floral edge and tends to be juicy and refreshing. ‘La Scolca’ has notes of honeysuckle and orange blossom on the nose and fresh citrus and orange flavours on the palate.

Monzio Compagnio 2010 – Chardonnay/ Pinot Nero – Franciacorta. (This Month’s Choice)
This is Italy’s equivalent of Champagne and is made in the classic method with the same Champagne grape blends also. Franciacorta is a relatively young area in comparison to the history of Champagne and it is already offering great quality and value. This Franciacorta 2010 vintage has all the expressive full flavours of a quality vintage Champagne, rich and full with flavours of golden apple and toasted almond leading to a fresh, clean finish.

Colomba Bianca ‘Kore’ – Nero D’Avola – Sicily
Sicily is one of the most exciting places for Italian wine at the moment with lots of local varieties that have strong flavoured reds and delicate whites. This wine has rich brambly fruits on the nose with flavours of cherry, blackberry and spices finishing with velvety soft tannins. Head to Sicily and the south of Italy if you’re a fan powerful ‘new world styles’.

Azienda Agricola – Cabernet Sauvignon – Garda
I’m a big fan of grape’s that are grown away from their native country of origin. A varietal that originates from France this wine has all the strong flavours you’d expect from a solid Cab, blackcurrant, menthol and spices all wrapped up with firm tannins.
