17/18 Season Review: February & March

Bury’s February and March could hardly be more contrasting as they still fight to avoid the drop. Bury had a very positive February, with two wins, three draws and one loss from their six games. Ryan lowe continued his positive start with a solid 1-1 draw with Blackpool, and then picked up the second win of his second spell with a 2-1 win over Wimbledon. A respectable 2-2 draw with Bradford followed, and then the Shakers were unlucky to only get a share of the spoils in a goalless draw with Southend. They then travelled to promotion chasing Blackburn and were found out by the better side in a 2-0 defeat, but rallied brilliantly to take all three points against Gillingham at Gigg Lane. Throwing away a two goal lead to relegation rivals Oldham was a big blow at the start at March, but it proved to be the only point the Shakers picked up in the whole month. A last Minute goal gave Peterborough a narrow 1-0 win after Bury had matched them for most of the 90 minutes, and three more losses followed in the next fixtures with MK Dons (2-1), Wigan (2-0) and Bristol Rovers (2-1), seeming to decide the Shakers fate as they head into the last seven games, 12 points from safety. Bury need a miracle to avoid relegation now, with every game from now till the end of the season a cup final if they don’t want to be playing in the bottom division next term. With the next game coming up being against local rivals Rochdale, in an intense local derby, Bury are in desperate need of turning performances into points.
